The sugar-free (aglycone), diosgenin is used for the commercial synthesis of cortisone, pregnenolone, progesterone, and other steroid products. Diosgenin is an important medicine for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, leukemia, encephalitis, skin diseases and tumors.
