| Brazil's Braskem is the continent's largest petrochemical company. It produces olefins like ethylene and propylene that are then used to make polyolefins such as polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC. These are then used to make plastic materials and fibers. Braskem also manufactures aromatics such as benzene, and intermediate chemicals like caprolactam used to make nylon. In 2009 it incorporated Petroquímica Triunfo – the final phase of the integration of federal energy company Petrobras' petrochemical assets into Braskem. In 2010 the company acquired Brazilian firm Quattor and the polypropylene business of American Sunoco Chemicals, creating Braskem America and expanding to 29 industrial units: 26 in Brazil (in Alagoas, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul) and three in the US. With these acquisitions, the firm became the biggest producer of resins in the Americas and the eighth largest globally. Today, Braskem produces more than 15Mt of thermoplastic resins and other petrochemical products. |
