Chemical Properties: It appears as white crystalline powder with the melting point being 345-346 ℃ (decomposition). It is insoluble in water (0.18%) with the solubility being 13% in boiling water. It is very slightly soluble in alcohol and organic solvents but insoluble in ether. It can form salt and dissolved upon coming across alkaline. The maximum absorption wavelength is 282nm.

Uses :
It belongs to vitamin medicines. It is suitable for the treatment of hyperuricemia, hypercholesterolemia, chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver. It can also be used as anti-anemia drug and nutritional roborant. Large doses can induce fatty liver. Patents of acute-phase hepatitis, leukemia and cancer should be hanged.

Production method: It can be obtained through: 1st: condensation reaction between diethyl oxalate acetic acid 2nd further cyclization with urea to obtain 5-ethoxycarbonyl-methylene hydantoin; 3rd: ring expansion, acid precipitation to obtain the orotic acid.
