Imidazole is a basic organic compound from the group of five-membered heterocyclic aromatic amines. The derivatives of imidazole are called imidazoles. With two nitrogen atoms in the ring system, imidazole is the characteristic component in the side chain of the underlying amino acid histidine.
Imidazole is more than a million times more basic than pyrrole because the sp2 nitrogen, which is part of a double bond, is structurally similar to pyridine and has a comparable basicity.
Pure imidazole has essentially no absorption at protein-relevant wavelengths (280 nm), but lower purities of imidazole can give a remarkable absorption at 280 nm.
Imidazole forms colorless crystals that dissolve well in water. The heterocycle has both basic and acidic properties and is therefore an ampholyte. |
