Tetranitromethane

Tetranitromethane (TNM) C[NO2]4, is a saturated nitro compound of methane, it is a nitroalkane.

Applications

Tetranitromethane is used in rocket propellant as an oxidizing agent in the production of liquid explosives and as an additive to increase the cetane number of diesel fuel. In organic compounds, it is also used as a reagent for detecting the presence of double bonds and as a mild nitrating reagent for reaction with tyrosine in proteins and peptides. It has been proposed as a surface disinfectant against viruses, based on data, suggesting that it is useful against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses, and many other microbial pathogens.

Tetranitromethane may be used as a component of liquid explosives with great urgency as the oxidant.
In organic synthetic chemistry it can be used as the nitrating agent, especially for basic reaction conditions. However, only a nitro group is used for the nitration, the resonance-stabilized Trinitromethidion (trinitromethane, trivial name Nitroform) no longer acts nitrating.
One important use in the chemical is based on the ability of the tetranitro methane display olefinic double bonds. As can be seen in the structural formula, the carbon atom is in an electron deficient center which forms with double bonds charge-transfer complex, which can be recognized by a strong yellow coloration. This fact is used in the analysis as an indicator of double bonds.
Reagent for nitration of enol silyl ethers and aromatic compounds. Employed in the photooxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides.

Manufacturing

Tetranitromethane using cold of acetic anhydride under the influence of 100 percent nitric acid produced. By-products water, carbon dioxide and acetic acid formed. This synthesis requires very precise compliance with the reaction conditions and is not without danger.
Tetranitromethane may be prepared with isopropanol in high yield by reaction of anhydrous nitric acid.
